URGENT: According to StatsCan, these uncertain times have ravaged the national economy and more Canadians are going hungry as a result. Prices of many food staples like carrots, potatoes, pasta, canned soup and canned tomatoes have risen significantly since January. Prices of meat, flour, rice and canned tuna are up since May of last year. Source: Global News
The problem is about to get worse as the as some government programs like the CERB [Canada Emergency Response Benefit] come to an end in the next few weeks.

“He is not a believer whose stomach is filled while the neighbor to his side goes hungry.” - Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ)

 Our Neighbours Are Going Hungry

It’s easy to assume that many, if not all, Canadians live a decent life. More often than not, we think problems like poverty, hunger and food insecurity only exist in less developed countries.
Unfortunately, this is far from the truth. 4.4 million Canadians struggle to put food on their table every single day. According to StatsCan, Almost one in seven (14.6%) Canadians indicated that they lived in a household where there was food insecurity in the month of May.
Every day, Canadians are torn between deciding what’s more important for them to survive - is it rent? Is it food? Is it electricity? Is it water?
Statistics Canada found that Canadians with children are more likely to be in a food-insecure household. In fact, of the hundreds of thousands that rely on food banks nationally, more than ⅓ are children.
A study by FoodShare Toronto and the PROOF research team at the University of Toronto found that regardless of homeownership and immigration status, Black Canadians continue to suffer the most from food insecurity.
Picture this:

You had a great job - life was good.

But one day, you lost your job.

You were your family's sole provider. Your children depended on you. Your spouse depended on you. Your elderly parents who lived with you depended on you.

The financial support from the government is simply not enough.

You're struggling to make rent. You've missed a few bill payments. You start skipping meals so that your children have something to eat.

You have to pick between paying rent and having a roof over your head, or feeding your family.

This is not the story about a family far away - in a land foreign to you.

This is sadly what thousands of families in Canada go through every single day.

Access to food is a human right, but as long as poverty exists, food insecurity will, too. Many Canadians who have never needed help to feed their families are forced to turn to food banks to help feed their families. This global pandemic has made things even worse. These vulnerable children, men, and women need your help.

Some provinces and areas are worse off than others:

  • More than half (51%) of households in Nunavut are food insecure - the highest rate in Canada and more than three times the average rate of the other provinces and territories (11%).
  • In the Northwest Territories, more than 24% of households experience food insecurity, followed by the Yukon at 17%.

During the early months of the pandemic, provincial governments across Canada ordered many non-essential businesses to close, forcing mass layoffs.

As a result, since mid-March more than one million Canadians have applied for unemployment insurance.

This means, more people have been trying to access the food banks and community food centres across the country.

🛑 The demand is high. Our food banks simply cannot handle the surge, and we desperately need your help to make sure we can continue to help Canadians through this crisis.🛑

Your neighbours need you now more than ever before.

The Solution

Fighting food insecurity is one of MWC's core missions. During the pandemic, we've adapted so that we could continue AND expand on our programs to continue to help the vulnerable segments of our society when they need it the most.

We're reaching out to you to not turn your back on our neighbours during their time of need.

Help us continue to support local Canadians through our multiple food programs:

FOOD BANKS

We currently operate 4 food banks across Canada in Mississauga, Scarborough, Iqaluit, and Inuvik. Last year alone, we had nearly 30,000 visits to our food banks.

REGENT MEALS

The Regent Park community faces many challenges like poverty, food insecurity, and a growing reliance on food banks. Every Sunday, we serve over 400 meals at the Christian Resource Centre to the Regent Park community.

MALVERN EATS

We work with other community organizations in Malvern to lead a free meal program for those in need. Once a week, we come together to provide residents with freshly prepared lunches. In the last 4 years alone, we've served over 34,000 meals to those who needed it.

MEALS ON WHEELS

Poverty and lack of accessibility go hand in hand with food insecurity. As part of our fight against food insecurity, we started the Meals on Wheels program in order to make our support more accessible to the vulnerable. To date, we have distributed over 288,000 meals to the most vulnerable

MEALS ON WHEELS FOR SENIORS

Twice a week, we provide low-income seniors with healthy meals delivered right to their doorsteps. Over 90,000 meals have been hand-delivered to date.

At times like this, we must step in to help our neighbours first and foremost, so that we can all get back on our feet as soon as possible.
